Koala’s Mattress Range Compared

Last Updated June 30, 2023

The New Koala Mattress – as the name suggests – is Koala’s flagship mattress which is an upgrade of its highly popular original Koala mattress which came out in 2015. It is one of Australia’s most popular foam mattresses in a box that’s eco-friendly and non-toxic. Similar to Ecosa and Sleeping Duck, a great feature of the New Koala is the ability to change the firmness pressure to suit your individual needs.

The New Koala mattress is the basic model in Koala’s new mattress range, which also includes the Calm As mattress and the Soul Mate mattress. The Calm As and Soul Mate mattress only came out mid 2021, so what’s the difference between the three of them (besides the price?) The New Koala is its cheapest coming in at $1,050 (Queen), while a Calm As reaches $1,650 (Queen) and the Soul Mate jumps even higher in price coming in at $2,700 (Queen). Confused as to what makes these three mattresses different? We’re going to break it down for you in this blog.

  • You want good value for moneyWho won’t rate it?

Who won’t rate it?

  • You prefer a bed that is more responsive
  • You prefer a traditional memory foam mattress

Just like the Ecosa, the New Koala is an adjustable 3-layer mattress (however the third layer is really just the TENCEL cover – which is 7cm of cushioning, mind you).

The top foam layer is the same Kloudcell™ material as the original Koala, but now it’s flippable so you can adjust it to your desired firmness. One side is firmer than the other and to swap the layers, you just unzip the mattress and flip the material. Easy as! The New Koala base is a thicker foam that used to be Ecofoam™ and is now NoPressure Adaptive Core.

The New Koala has 3 targeted high-density precision cut support zones to help with press relief. The Queen comes in at $1,050 which is the same pricepoint as the original Ecosa.

New Koala Calm As Mattress

Mattress type: Memory foam

Warranty period: 10 years

Trial: 120 night trial

Adjustable firmness: Yes

Height: 29cm

Support zones: 3

Price (Queen): $1,650

Who will love it?

  • You sleep hot
  • You want extra comfort

Who won’t rate it?

  • You want a budget mattress
  • You like an ultra-firm mattress

The Calm As mattress is one of the newest mattresses released from Koala and is the mid-range product, with a Queen coming in at $1,650. The biggest difference between the Calm As and the New Koala is the edge support and a transition layer between the top comfort layer and the foundation foam. The top comfort layer now has an extra 1cm quilted COOLMAX fibre plush cover, meanwhile the transition layer has grooves to allow for more airflow through the mattress. This is what makes it a great option for people who tend to sleep hot.

The StayPut edge support (not featured in the New Koala) is a unique feature as memory foam mattresses don’t typically come with edge support. However, this feature is ideal for people who sleep close to the edge or often sit on the edge of the bed as the StayPut technology will ensure you don’t sink into the edge.

The Calm As is also the only mattress in the Koala range that has multi-layered zoning, which means you’re supported from the top of the mattress to the bottom of the mattress.

New Koala Soul Mate Mattress

Mattress type: Memory foam

Warranty period: 10 years

Trial: 120 night trial

Adjustable firmness: Yes

Height: 33cm

Support zones: 5

Price (Queen): $2,700

Who will love it?

  • You’re after a premium mattress
  • You’re a side, back and stomach sleeper

Who won’t rate it?

  • You want a budget mattress
  • You want a mattress with multi-layered zoning

The Soul Mate is certainly Koala’s premium mattress coming in at $2,700 (Queen). It has a very similar design to the Calm As mattress but with higher quality materials. The top cover is made from Sensapole and is a 9cm comfort layer and 2cm quilted plush cover. Underneath is the same flippable foam and a transition layer, but on the Soul Mate mattress this material is bamboo charcoal memory foam. This provides top-notch pressure relief and ultimately a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep. Bamboo charcoal is antimicrobial, reduces heat, and relieves pressure.

Also, the Soul Mate mattress has 5 Zoned Adaptive Foam Springs, which almost makes it a hybrid mattress but without springs. The foam springs react to your body’s movements and make the bed somewhat bouncier but without compromising the zero partner disturbance promise Koala has. Finally, the Soul Mate also has edge support that’s 4cm thicker than the Calm As mattress.

New Koala Vs Calm As Vs Soul Mate

So what’s the real difference between the three? They’re all flippable memory foam mattresses at the end of the day. While the three models are very similar, they’re really designs to meet differing budgets. So while the design isn’t all that different as you go up in models, the materials used do go up in quality and are more comfortable. So really, it’s about budget at the end of the day!
