Koala Timber Bed Base Review

Koala may be best known for its mattress but its timber bed base is pretty popular too. It’s minimalist and easy to put together – but what else do you need to know before buying?

This review is of the Koala Timber Bed Base (Koala also has the new Balmain bed base and Paddington bed base).

This is my review after building it, and sleeping on it for a week. I’ll be talking about the benefits of the base, the cost, durability, things to keep in mind and more.

Benefits of the Koala Bed Base

• Quick to assemble with no tools: No tools required, this bed base can be put together in 4 minutes (it took me 10).
• Minimalist design: minimalist design (although it only comes in one colour) to suit any bedroom.
• Durable: It’s very sturdy and can hold up to 600kg of wieght, and comes with a 5 year warranty.
• Trial period: Like its mattresses, you get a 120 night trial to see if you like it.

Things to Keep in Mind

Despite being called the Koala Timber Bed Base… it’s actually not solid timber. It’s Oak veneer plywood, which isn’t the same as a timber bed base. Ecosa’s bed base for example is solid American Oak, which explains why the Koala bed base costs less for seemingly the same product.

Also, a common complaint about this bed base is that it can get squeaky, especially after a couple of months of sleeping on it. Koala counteracts these claims by saying wood expands and contracts with the weather which may cause some squeaks, but to simply rub beeswax on the joints.

Bunged up knees and shins is another common issue, with the Koala bed base being quite low to the ground and the edge of the base extended further than the width of the mattress, so definitely something to be mindful of.

Koala’s thrown in these nifty holes to manage your bedside cables so you’re not left with a wiry mess, which is pretty cool.

Hidden storage space

There’s also space behind the headboard for things like pillows and blankets, which is ideal if you’re short on storage space.

Shipping & Unboxing Of The Koala Bed Base

Delivery of the Koala bed frame is free and can be delivered Australia-wide – in some instances same day metro areas.

Shipping isn’t free, however. It cost NSW(75$), ACT(75$) , VIC(75$), QLD(75$), SA(75$), WA(75$), TAS(85$), NT ($350).

Unboxing took a lot more time than I thought, and the boxes are pretty heavy and come shipped in 3 boxes – so like the Ecosa bed frame, you end up with a lot of excess cardboard.

Assembly was perhaps a bit easier than the Ecosa – it was almost like putting together LEGO! And Koala says it can be done by one person, which was definitely my experience as I put it together solo.

Koala claims it can be built in under 4 minutes, but it took me around 10 (not including unboxing the pieces).

The steps to build it are displayed on a large piece of cardboard, and even for me as someone who’s not very handy, it was pretty simple to follow.

Trial Period & Returns

You get 120 nights to trial out the bed base to see if it’s right for you, which is a pretty cool benefit of buying this base and it’s not something Koala’s competitors offer.
