The Different Australian Bed Sizes (Mattresses) in 2023

Last Updated June 30, 2023

Shopping for a new mattress and wondering what bed size is your best fit? You’ve come to the right place. In this article we’ll be covering everything you need to know about the different Australian bed sizes in 2023.

The 5 Most Common Australian Bed Sizes

Most mattresses in Australia can be purchased in five sizes:

  • Single
  • King single
  • Double
  • Queen
  • King

Some mattresses are also available in a long single and a super king size.

Let’s talk more in detail about the different sizes and mattress dimensions you’ll find in Australian mattresses to help you find the right mattress for you.

Single Mattress

  • Width: 92cm
  • Length: 188cm
  • Average price: $500-800

A single bed is best suited to toddlers, children and teenagers. Adults can get away with sleeping in a single size bed but it’s likely it won’t be the most comfortable sleep, especially for larger or taller adults.

Long Single Mattress

  • Width: 92cm
  • Length: 203cm
  • Average price: $600-900

An Australian long single mattress is the same width as a single mattress but is 15cm longer (half a ruler). Long single mattresses aren’t very popular, but you can find them! They’re the best mattress growing children, teenagers or adults who are happier sleeping on a narrow bed with some extra length.

Fun fact: two long single mattresses placed together make a king size mattress.

King Single Mattress

  • Width: 107cm
  • Length: 203cm
  • Average price: $800-1,100

A king single mattress is the same length as a long single mattress, but it’s 15cm wider. Most children graduate from a single to a king single, before moving to a double when they’re older and if they have the sleeping space in their bedroom. King single mattresses can also be a great option for studio apartments.

Double Mattress

  • Width: 138cm
  • Length: 188cm
  • Average price: $800-1,500

An Australian double mattress is a common bed size in Australia, and is often found in spare or guest rooms. Double beds are pretty versatile and ideal for singles and for couples – although a double size might be a little bit of a squish for two people, depending on the size of each person.

Queen Mattress

  • Width: 153cm
  • Length: 203cm
  • Average price: $900-2,000+

An Australian queen size mattress is the most common Australian bed size, with nearly two thirds of Aussies sleeping on a queen size mattress. It will comfortably fit two adults. The price of a queen size bed will vary. It can be as low as $900, and go all the way up into the thousands.

King Mattress

  • Width: 183cm
  • Length: 203cm
  • Average price: $1,000-3,000+

For the second largest Australian bed size, choose a king size bed. While not as popular as queen size mattresses, king size mattresses are certainly gaining popularity, especially for master bedrooms, with about one fifth of Aussies sleeping on a king bed. This is the bed size you’ll usually find in luxury hotels and certainly has enough space for two – possibly even three sleepers.

Super King Mattress

  • Width: 203cm
  • Length: 203cm
  • Average price: $2,000+

The biggest bed you’ll find on the Aussie market is a super king bed. Square in shape, this bed should accommodate sleepers of all sizers. It’s not very common in AUstralia, and you’d struggle to find sheets and a doona to fit the bed. However, super king mattresses do give you extra space for your children to sleep with you, or for your pets.

Australian Bed Sizes Height

When shopping for a new bed, it’s good to remember that most mattresses in Australia sit between 25-36 cm in height, with the average mattress height in Australia sitting at roughly 30cm in height (thickness).

Why does mattress height matter? Well, it actually matters a fair bit. Some bed sheets may not properly fit on a tall mattress. Height is also important when considering how well your mattress will sit on a particular bed base or bed frame.

Most bed bases will be the same size as the mattress (i.e. any Queen mattress should fit on most Queen bed bases) – but this isn’t always the case. When considering your bedroom space and the size of mattress you want or need, shop around for the right bed base that will definitely fit your mattress. We recommend buying the perfect mattress before finding a bed base to match and not the other way around! A good mattress is much more important than your bed base.
